Well, so much has been going on I kinda forgot I even had a blog!! I am excited to return to bloggin' cause I have been doing more artwork, new ideas, new supplies, a new art work station and joined a new collage journal group that I LOVE on facebook!! Talk about support...it has been awesome. Here is a pic of what I am in the process of playing with....my new collage journal titled MANDALAME! WOW it's 2011 and I have really neglected my blog! That's what happens when one owns their own business, teaches and takes care of mom! So I have no idea what to say! Is that possible, Elizabeth not knowing what to say? haha

Maybe something wise for the new year. I have learned the hard way that one must take a day off....if you work every single day, there is something called exhausted on the way to burn-out, which equals illness. So, after all our big DrumZZone activities are over, after Feb, I'm going to take one day off a week again. It's a plan! And of course I am going to lose weight! What would the new year be if I didn't at least say the words..haha

Almost forgot to mention the PAS Drum Circle Kam and I facilitated at Bing High School yesterday, HOT! HOT HOT!!

When we did this 2 years ago, there were so many kids there, young kids...so that's what I was expecting this year. NO, wrong. There were mostly teenagers and a performance group of College students from Virginia. Usually when I facilitate it takes a little time to get the circle going but when I play with musicians it is so easy! A completely different energy. And to play with a full room of experienced percussionists is incredible! We were kickin' yesterday and it was hard to stop. Joel Smales kept signaling how many minutes before the next workshop and I think we came down to a minute! It was awesome!

Thanks Joel for inviting The DrumZZone and thanks everyone who came out at 9:30am to start the day drumming. In my mind no better way to begin any day....

Thanks everyone for coming out to support Earth Hour, Drumming in the dark. I hope those who couldn't make it turned out their lights at home!

We had a wonderful surprise guest last night. A very talented Cello player stopped by and played with the drums...it was so intense and beautiful to hear Cello with African Drums. We sang a few songs and had a really special evening. I have never played with a Cello before and have to say it was a very unique experience and an honor. Such a soulful instrument the Cello.....

Never know what's going to happen at the DrumZZone!!! Always a memorable experience.

So, I think I can safely put away wool sweaters and Turtle necks!

Garden needs work and I plan to take ONE day off and do it on monday. My pond needs to be emptied, all 300 gallons. My fish survived the winter and I'll need to catch them, who knows how many! Goldfish multiply pretty fast.

Also want to get my peas in....let's see how far I get.

Well, I slept in tis A.M. so better get moving.

Hello all, I've been so busy lately I haven't had a chance to sit and write...and tell you all that has been going on. Today, the alarm was set for 7:00am so I had time to get up, dressed load the drums and travel to drum with hmmm 80 or 90? 5th graders! What a fantastic time, the kids were so much fun. Kam and I feel so lucky to work with so many different populations. No two groups are the same! And I never know what to expect. Most of these kids had never seen African drums before and never played them either and they were fantastic and sang with us too! Niiiice.

By now you've probably heard that The DrumZZone community drum circle is the first and third monday of the month at 7:oopm which was tonight, full house and frickin KICKIN'! New faces and familiar faces at each circle. I WAS so tired before circle and now I don't think I can fall asleep! Drumming can be meditative and calming but tonight not the case, it was very energizing. Thank you all for your energy, and see you in 2 weeks!

Here's a peek at some practice sessions in my teaching room at the DZ. Students are busy practicing and yea, fooling around too, getting ready for their performances on Feb 6th. I decided to hold an adult "recital"....don't really like that word....cause it's going to be a pretty relaxed fun evening for students and their friends and family at the DZ. There may be a few songs by Alode', mayyybe a drum circle afterwards and maybe food, we'll see. I'm working on it!

Well what a blast! The first DrumZZone community circle in the new space was kickin'! I have not laughed or played that hard in a long time, it felt great. I had to post a pic of Marian doing her solo, so fricken funny. And there is David and Robert who showed up a little late...well, more than a little late, they came when the circle was over! OOps. We'll see them a bit earlier next time.

We had such a great turn out and such positive response that Kam and I decided to hold the circle twice a month through the winter. So, it will not only be held on the first monday at 7:00pm but the third monday of the month as well.

Come join us for the next circle on January 18th, 7:00-8:30pm! Bring your friends and fam, there are plenty of drums to share.

Story for ya.

Moving the DrumZZone to Washington Ave has been an amazing experience. I feel we are a part of a family there. Our neighbors are so friendly and fun. Almost everyday we are visited by Gussy and Sam, 2 Golden Retrievers and their owners Steve and JoAnn. We chat with other store owners and if I need help with anything there are people around. It is a nice change from the parking lot..although we liked visits from the security guys over there.

There is an elderly gentleman, a gentle man, who shuffles up and down the street just about everyday. The shop owners watch out for him and make sure he is okay, has food and clothing. I noticed as it got colder he was out with no coat, no gloves...so being new on the street I figured he was leaving them home and forgetting to put stuff on for the weather. Got to a point where it was raining and sooo cold and still no coat, no gloves. Only a heavy cotton sweatshirt and hat. So,while at the store I picked up good gloves and went to find him and ask about the coat situation. He was so grateful for the gloves and told me he had no coat. I told my students that day to see if they had a mens coat hanging around and that I would look at home too. A few days later, one student dropped off a spring coat and I received a phone call from another student who asked his size so he could purchase one. Not only did he buy a nice warm coat, he decided to gift a hat, wool socks and a new sweater! He asked me not to mention his name. Kam and I gave the elderly man the gifts and he was so excited and grateful......we see him everyday, he stops for a second to wave in our store window wearing the gifts. It is good to know that there are people who do care and are willing to help someone in need....

If you want to have some fun with us, meet at The Drumzzone at 3:00pm sharp with your drum to get ready to go. Then we'll walk to the line up and down the street. Very fun. Parade for your fam and friends starts at 4! I'm thinking Santa will be in the parade too.

*If it's a yes, dress warm and colorful, weird, funny hats are acceptable! Or just dress like you.....it's alllll good.

So, guess what Kam and I did yet again today! PAINTED at The Drumzzone. Big surprise hey?We did have a few volunteers come to help with the painting and deeeeeeply appreciated it. Thanks Patty and Lisa. Every little bit helps cause I AM SICK OF FRICKEN PAINTING!!!! We haven't even started cleaning and fixing the office/green room upstairs yet....hmmmm. Kam says she sees the light at the end of the tunnel with work...me, NO! There is still alot to do.

It is fun to transform a space though...amazing what building a few walls, new carpet, and painting can do. My teaching room is half the size of the old Drumzzone and is so cozy and warm. Drumming classes and holding events, like Taiko, in the workshop area is incredible. People are not jammed together and the sound quality is perfect. The store front looks so inviting and we have room to expand. We love our neighbors and the people coming in are great too. All is well on Washington Ave in Endicott!!

So, more in process pics of 112 Washington Ave. We have learned to let the "carpet professionals" lay the carpet. Thanks for doing such an awesome job for us Endwell Rug.

Kam and I have been working hard on my new funky teaching room and Kams drum building/repair workshop. Yes, WE built walls, put in doors-n-windows and I learned I do not like working with sheet rock...painting is not my favorite but I'll do it over putting up sheet rock any day. These rooms are behind the class/workshop area along with our mini kitchen. And yes, I did get the purple carpet in! I'll post more pics when we get the exterior walls of the rooms done...almost there.

Just got home from a day of TAIKO in Endicott at The DrumZZone....all I can say is WOW. I feel so much peace and joy...relaxed and energized at the same time...

Elaine is an incredible teacher and when she performs you can't take your eyes off her, she can be so intense and every movement on the drums is...accurate, precise, her sounds so pure and crisp. She tells a story on the drums when she plays, it is incredible.

I have spent time with many drum teachers and have to say it's rare to find a person that is not only a great performer but can teach in a way that people can really learn something. A great performer does not always mean a good teacher and some teachers don't perform well...Elaine does both with grace. I admire her skills.

Thank you all who spent the day with us....Kam and I are grateful for the support....the Drumzzone is about community, that's for sure. Without you we can not invite guests like Elaine. We' ll have more surprises for you very soon...so many ideas so little time!

Okay....a little old at this point but here they are. We saw the space and said YES the day before Ubaka was to arrive and I took these pics....Store front, shop area, workshop area, to the back where we have a bathroom, a teaching room, a drum building workshop, and our office upstairs! You should see what we have done to transform it all. It is amazing what paint and a little creative energy can do! We love our new home....and we have so many surprises for you in that huge open workshop area! The best is yet to come....

Moving The Drumzzone!

Let's start with moving stuff into the new space...Kam and I and the TRUCK...load my load by load!! That is after we painted, ripped up the tile floor and cleaned...oh and moved all the shelving...

Drumzzone at 112 Washington Ave, ENDICOTT!

Well....I am soooo sore! Every muscle, ouch. And we are still not done moving! It is freekin amazing how many drums and stuff we packed into that little building on Hayes! Our 30-35 rental drums are still in the old space....today Kam and I are headed off to Elmira for a day of drumming at The Elmira Psychiatric Center, all new groups of patients and staff! Cool.

So, we DO plan on having The new Drumzzone open from noon to 6pm friday and saturday this weekend. Kam or I will be there, taking turns running between the 2 locations to empty the old space.

I have to say this move is bitter sweet for me. Every time I am in the old space, I think about all the people who played a djembe for the very first time...all the Alode' practices, group classes and all the laughter and memories created there. I'll miss that parking for sure, my birds, squirrels and the garden I put in...I'll miss watching the rain and snow storms coming in from far away and the many rainbows I saw outside the windows. I remember when Kam and I first talked to Jay about renting and how excited we were to get the business off the ground. New beginnings and my first business adventure. Emptying the space is emotional for me, it was my second home really.

When I am in the new space the energy there is already so positive, it is warm and welcoming and Jo (our new landlord) and Steve are so much FUN! We are already joking around and people have already peeked in the door and are amazed at how cool and interesting the space is. The new space holds so much possibility and promise. When I am there I have ideas flooding in about all we are now free to do because of the size of the drumming area and being on a busy street is already proving to be a very smart move from the parking lot. Yes, there is much more work to do to get the entire space usable but everything in life is process and watching the transformation is really fun. It is strange how I don't think much of the old space when I am in the new one....I am overwhelmed with excitement and it is good. I'll have to tell you the story about how the new space came about some time..it is so true that when a door closes another opens and you absolutely have to listen to messages and signs, cause they ARE there!! This move to this new space was meant to be for Kam and I and the Drumzzone. It is the right time and the right location and that feels good not to have doubt. Well I gotta go! Till later. E

It's all about community and memories...I think, no, I KNOW some people surprised themselves last night and did some things with their drums they didn't think they could...like...get on stage with Ubaka and play or get up and dance in the pit. The beauty of it! Day or night...yea, alright, I was a little obsessed..yea yea am still obsessed with this thing. I'm going to tie it together with leather and hang rocks, and other funky things from it. I actually brought this home plus 2 small sculptures to play with when I have time. Time...Kam said, what time will you have Elizabeth?? She's right, we are booked...but it is nice to imagine time for art, isn't it? You never know, I may get a day....

Water, wilderness, wildlife, tomato soup & art!

Just returned from a much needed camping break...no business talk, no cell/computer and no DRUM! Yea, that's right, no drumming for 3 days. It's okay, I'm still a drummer! Only water: the falls, kayaking daytime and in the dark...yep, errie and very cool...wilderness: short hikes, vegging in the boat and hanging at site....wildlife: hmm, an eagle, hawks, chipmunks, red squirrel, ducks, and our friendly skunk just checking out the campsite while we were sitting by the fire. I did save a few caterpillars who were stupid and thought my boat, the truck and the table were nice places to be. Tomato soup and grill cheese: YES I can cook and that is all I'm saying!

Now the art part. My "plan" was to rest, no serious activity what-so-ever...well, coffee fixed that plan. One morning after a nice tall mug of coffee with hazelnut creamer, I decided to burn ALL the fricken burdock on the campsite. It's a useless, ugly, huge, pain in the butt plant that only brings neg memories of childhood sneakers and socks covered with those things, which, by the way, did happen on this camping mission as well. It took me a few hours to cut, but it is allllll gone on that site! YES, that's what I said, excellent accomplishment. That was when I found this cool crooked branch with a lot of personality screaming SCULPTURE! I will devote an entire blog entry to this masterpiece that sat on the picnic table for 2 days and is now on my back porch. Things are bigger at home....hmmmm...where do I put it now??

Introducing our therapeutic slit drum

It has been hard to keep this one a secret! I am so excited to finally share the news. This morning this huge slit drum arrived in Endwell from Germany. It has 8 keys and can be tipped on it's side so a person can lay on it to feel the vibration when it's played. It was designed for music therapy but anyone can benefit from the deep, rich tones and healing, calming vibration. The Drumzzone/Notbongos is now the East Coast Showroom and dealer for these amazing instruments. Come to the Drumzzone and try this one out. I have never seen a slit drum this large! It's really niiiiiice.

Here is just one corner of the shop FILLED with drums, isn't it exciting? The top photo are a new line of African djembes that we will be carrying. They have a different kind of carving on the bottom, I haven't seen drums carved like this before. They sound really nice, a good variation from base to tone to slap and the rope colors are cool.

Remember when I told you that Kam and I packed her car to the ceiling with the drums we hand-picked from out west?? Well, the rest of them arrived last night and filled my living room! We were the first to play them after we unloaded them off a container from Africa. They have so much energy! They are ready for you to play and purchase this weekend. Come down during store hours friday and saturday noon to 6 to see all the new drum children, the shop is packed with new merchandise and lots of drums! I'd say pretty close to 100 new drums...all different types including duns, djembes, bougarabous, frame drums, doumbeks, and many new fun surprises too. I am waiting on a very large package with a new therapeutic drum that is absolutely incredible...hope it arrives by this weekend!

Kam and I were in Norwich NY doing a Kids Drum Jam throughout the day last weekend. What fun! Colorscape is such a special event....incredible artwork, free entertainment on stage all day and drumming. What more can a person ask for? Kids walking around with painted faces, families sitting together talking, some dancing going on, and spending quality time with friends. It was a good day.

These little guys are my new friends, prairie dogs are everywhere out west.....I love them! They are funny characters. So, there I am trying to get a pic and am told they are not so cute.... it was obvious they were overpopulated and making some pretty big holes. Apparently they damage the farmers fields and livestock trip over the holes....and ummm.....they are said to carry the plague and have become a huge concern. This I did not know as I was walking around the holes to get a good photo. I have to say that even with the bad news, I still love prairie dogs, they made me laugh every time I saw them doing their prairie dog things. I'm grateful I did not get bitten by one of them or even by one of their fleas though! If I had, I don't think I'd be feelin' the love!

Not only did we hand pick drums for The Drumzzone, we learned some new things too. Kam built a talking drum with the guys. Very cool, good job Kam. She hears those duns calling from the warehouse, they want to be PLAYED! Yes, we brought some home. How could we not? They have a very loud, persistent voice, those djuns!

Well it's work time. Kam and I helped unload nearly 1,000 Djembes, Duns, Bugurabous, and skins off a truck...yea...time for work alright. Actually it was very exciting to know the last people touching these drums were in Africa. We helped unwrap many and played them for the very first time in the US! I could feel the energy, drums saying, "play me, pick me, take ME home!" And so that we did, we hand picked excellent drums and many of them, along with bells, new hand percussion and some surprises too. We packed the car to the ceiling and the rest is being shipped to Endicott as we speak. We spent hours playing drums..and jammed a bit with our new friends in the warehouse too. Very special people, felt like family....niiice.

We spent much time on Pearl Street in boulder which is Ithaca but huge. Much more to see and do, a very busy place. Excellent shops with amazing local art, food, entertainment, friendly fun people, and a view of the mountains anywhere you are. There is a law there that buildings can only be one story high as to not block the view of the Rockies...it's a good law! Evertime you forget where you are you look up and stop, oh, the Rockies. One night we thought we were going in town for a drum circle but instead ran into the CU Buffalo Band! They were playing and marching up and down the street most of the night. Talk about community spirit and high energy! It was so fun. This photo was taken outside a little restaurant in the middle of my meal. There were musicians young and old and so much gong on. A great night.

Well after 2 days of haze over the Rockies from the forest fires in California, today it was clear and I experienced the Rockies! Words can not describe the colors, the light, the textures, the wildlife, the fresh air and silence. It will be hard to leave this place....

So, I'd rather not talk about Nebraska, long story...but Colorado is incredible! We arrived this afternoon and were greeted by 2 donkeys, a horse and those beautiful, delicate, white flowers that I don't recognize. I stepped on a cactus by accident taking that photo and didn't realize they are a mini version of our thistle...yes thorny. The cactus are growing like our crab grass low to the ground. The colors here are so soft and warm....and the light as we drove closer to the Rockies was an odd creamy salmon color. It's hard to describe. It was cloudy so I could only see a faint outline of the mountains from the hotel.....can't wait to step outside in the morning. Tomorrow is a day of drummin' and I don't know if I'll be able to take pics, we'll see.

I can't believe I am here, it is wonderful. Oh and the wind turbines lined the road, quite the site. We tried to count but were overwhelmed with how many were in some areas. I am very tired so settling down early. Night.

We are in IOWA tonight! Left Endicott at 6:00am and drove all day, AWESOME! My first trip out west for some drummin' business and fun! And that is a pic of Illinois, a lot of big sky and corn fields....Iowa is much of the same...Beautiful and flat. Kam and I are staying next to the worlds largest truck stop and check out what is parked outside tonight on several HUGE trucks, pieces of wind turbines that we saw a lot of in the last few states we drove through, way cool! Just look at the size of one of these blades, Kam looks very little, hey? Makes you wonder how do they put them together...amazing. We sure do live in a beautiful country where anything is possible. I am filled with gratitude. Namaste' Elizabeth And oh, Kam and I are looking for the ball field in Iowa.....

Thoughts on re-entry from The Happenin' 2009

What a weekend. So much to say and finding words is difficult. I am refocused, energized, filled with love, peace, joy and gratitude. Many new creative drum ideas are being born since I returned home and so much to share.

To be in the presence of the elder women drum teachers...to learn form them, drum with them...these are the pioneers, the ones who paved the way for me to do what I do everyday. I am beyond grateful for their hard work, passion and for continuing to teach me the way of the drum. I am 12 years on my drum path and have much work to do..Djembe is a commitment and a discipline and I have work to do with myself and my drum...

One story. Kam and I were vending, set up a beautiful DrumZZone/Notbongos corner filled with our drums and percussion. One evening, Nuru came over to play our bougurabous and Edwina came to jam with her on one of our djembes. They were joking and jammin' and Ubaka joined the group. Soon enough women grabbed their drums and started playing, circles around circles...people started dancing and singing Baba songs, old spirituals and yes songs from the 70's too. Nana played djun with Kam......we played and danced into the morning. It is a natural high, so much energy, no sense of time..only a deep connection to the sounds, the people, the vibrations. Just as Baba describes it, I am the drum, you are the drum, we are the drum. To play with these women was an honor, to hear them play, an honor, to watch their hands and listen to their voices...I can not find words to describe the experience. That much talent and passion in one space together....I am changed.

One of my students said that she had gone to bed early to rest up for the next day of classes and heard the jam, it pulled her out of bed and into the building! Drumming can be that powerful....it is bigger then any one person. I can close my eyes and see that room filled with only positive energy, only love, support and acceptance...I don't think there was a person who did not feel a sense of belonging in that space. I will never forget that night. One of the highlights of the Happenin'.

Firsts!

Monday was another day of FIRST TIME EVERS! This year The Drumzzone, Kam and I have been honored to be a part of many firsts with drumming in our area, monday night was another day to celebrate. What do I mean? Well, this year we were honored to introduce drumming to the local Jewish community with a 10 week intensive and “birthed” the first local Jewish community drum circle. We were also invited with drums to be a part of a Jewish service. Drums have never been a played in this synagogue or part of a service! We are doing the same in another Temple in a few weeks. I was the first to put djembe rhythms to a few Jewish chants and prayers! I also had the opportunity to teach djembe to 2 very unique students, one who is deaf and the other blind. They have both challenged me and made me a better teacher. Kam and I invented a few new products for drummers that we now carry at the shop and we had our first tv commercial! We had our first Drumzzone Drum~Around which was a wonderful success.

On monday night, we had the first outdoor fire circle with seniors we’ve been drumming with for about 2 years in the activity room! We counted about 45 people around the circle, everyone had some sort of percussion instrument. It was in a beautiful garden, courtyard area with flowers everywhere. We helped celebrate the taking down of a wall that divided the buildings for years so residents can walk through the garden to visit friends and/or a spouse in another building. It was a great time, singing, drumming, and yes toasted marshmallows and smores! Yum.

I received some very unexpected news this morning that I’d like to share in hopes you’ll learn as much as I have from this tragedy....

A few months ago I was approached to work with Scott who was blind and in supportive living. At first I was not sure how to work with him and if I could teach him to play Djembe at all. After the first 2 lessons and laughing with him throughout, I realized I didn’t need to do much more than just play a rhythm, soon enough he’d be right on it. He was truly gifted...had a fantastic sense of humor and could play any instrument he was given. He had an amazing talent to play by ear, and loved to share his gift with anyone that would listen. He wanted to try everything, djembe, dundun, and loved the tamborine! Not only that but he came up with his favorite songs to accompany the African rhythms we played and could drum and sing the first day!

Scott died very unexpectedly in his sleep a few days ago. He was young, healthy, everyone is shocked and baffled.....he was on the treadmill, ate healthy and always told me I “should eat more fruit and drink 8 glasses of water a day” like he did. Every drum lesson at The Drumzzone with Scott was a joy, he brightened any room he entered, was a kind soul, genuinely funny and fun to be around. He taught me to laugh at mistakes, not to take life too seriously and to enjoy and appreciate my eyesight...something I don't take for granted anymore. Every once in a while I’d slip and say, “watch my hands or look at this” oops... and he’d say, “Don’t worry Elizabeth, it’s okay I can hear really well!”

Scott knew how to live in the present moment and even though he did not like change at all, he faced it and moved forward. Life can turn on a dime....we have no idea how long we have here....so face your fears, do what you want to do with your life, say what you need to say, be the you you want to be right NOW! There is no such thing as the “right time” or waiting for this or that. You may not have tomorrow and those around you may not either. This summer Scott went to Disney, he went to camp, flew on a plane, visited his family, played in a band, volunteered his time in various places and was taking drum lessons with me...wow. I am humbled by his courage to not let his disabilities or his fear hold him back. He knew he had a gift and was proud to share it. I was lucky to have met him. We can all learn a little something from Scott.

Drum production has begun in the workshop!

Hello all! The latest Drumzzone news is NEW DRUMS are on their way!! Not only an order from Africa but Kam and I have started working on drums in the workshop! YEA! Way too long a winter....It feels so great to be creative again. New funky rope colors, new quality goat and cow skins...New ideas too. I'm working on a signature drum and spent the past weekend sanding, sanding and more sanding and staining other drum shells as well. Last week I got into painting some Funky drums that are at the shop right now. I had a new idea for our Funky drums and tried it yesterday, wait till you see the new look. So cool. They're drying right now and we'll head them hopefully this weekend. I'm excited.

What else. The first few water lilies opened in the pond today! A light pink and white one, niiiice. Peas are almost ready to pick in the garden and broccoli and tomatoes doing great. My rabbit and deer friends are getting a drink and leaving. I haven't seen any more damage and hope it stays that way. I decided to try growing gourds to make shekeres! I watched a few people making them at the last drumming weekend and it's fun. Learned a few tricks in growing them.....we'll see how it goes.

My new obsession...and Rashis too!

So, okay, yes a new obsession. Water...ponds, containers, fountains. My dream is to some day live by a lake where I feel most at home. That may not happen for a while so I find other ways to surround myself with water. As you saw in those spring cleaning pics, I did put a pond in my backyard many years ago that I love. I also have a half barrel water container in the garden as well. THEN I saw this cool porch mini pond thing last year that I've not been able to get out of my head, so I purchased it yesterday. And YES it is very high on the cool factor and sounds like a stream. I took plants from the big pond and they are adjusting great. The thing is my cats think they have a huge new water dish and were kinda water logged last night. Watching them yesterday you'd think they haven't had a drink in days, it was so funny. Today Rashi is very obsessed with taking the water plants OUT of the pond. He likes water and is used to baths so he's got his little feet and mouth on the plants constantly. It took a while but he's figured out how to get one out to play with on the porch...yea...not great. I didn't think he would succeed but he has. I need dumb pets, cause these smart ones are TROUBLE! haha. No he's awesome, just higher maintenance. Thought you might enjoy the action on my back porch. I know he is cute...I was thinking of floating a rubber duck in there for him to drag out..kinda tacky though.

Drumming with The BOY SCOUTS!

Kam and I went out to Chenango Bridge to drum with a few Boy Scout troops and their parents. WOW, what a great time! The boys were so much fun and really great drummers I might add. They sang and danced too! I received a few really nice e-mails in response and I'm told that some of the boys were singing the song they learned with us at home and in school. The New and Improved Drumzzone!!

So, many of you have come to the Zone in the past week to be shocked and surprised! See, I CAN keep a secret! There's been major work done on the interior of The Drumzzone, it has been transformed. It's a brand new space, different energy, seems soooo much bigger! My teaching room is gone and we moved the rental drums to the storage room. I was going to post a photo of the completed project but thought I'd post the great guys working on it instead. You'll have to come see for yourself!! This means bigger classes and workshops aaaaand MORE drums and percussion instruments!! YAHOO! They'll be here very soon. I want to thank Huron and all the guys for their hard work, and the ceiling leak is fixed too. You're the BEST! It's all good, very good.

Wisteria at The Drumzzone?!! YES!

I took so many photos of the new flowers in my garden I couldn't decide which ones to post! It is so beautiful outside....wow. I placed some on the side so you can enjoy them for a while. This was my favorite. It's in full bloom and smells so sweet. I just can't believe all the wildlife and beauty right in that Drumzzone parking lot! This Wisteria must go up 20-25 feet! It's taken over a maple tree and an apple tree as well. If you've never seen these flowers, come to the zone and enjoy them. It's incredible. Oh, and while you're there, check out the new garden I put in along the fence. I can't be there without flowers. Wait till you see what I planted!!!!

So, finally, today was pond day...I've been so busy drumming, my garden has been neglected. Last night Kam and I worked at the Drumzzone till like 10:30pm and when we returned to the house, we heard the TOADS...went back to see maybe 30 or 40 of them swimin' around in the pond, callin' the girls. A few neighbors came over to sit and watch them hop in from all over. The water was so bad, it smelled horrible, they didn't seem to care though. Anyway today we emptied all 300 or so gallons, replaced all the rocks and started refilling. It was so hot, WOW, felt like august. I'll repot my water lillies this week and the pond will be done till fall. I have to say that it's so good to see very healthy toads, and many of them, with the way our environment is these days. They are very funny to watch at night. Enjoy a few pics of our work. I'll take more when it's all finished. Hope you were able to get outdoors today!

WOW! What an incredible experience. David and Eden came to Endicott to share their gifts and spread their message of peace, light and love...it's really hard to find words to describe the sounds, colors and rhythms I heard last night..and how I felt. I'm processing. Eden painted her experience and it's....an accurate visual of the what's going on in our area, powerful piece...There will be a print at shop in a few months. Kam and I do have Davids CD's and some examples of Edens work in the form of cards available for purchase at The Drumzzone now. If you're interested in the singing bowls we have many to choose from. Recharged and Refocused!

Hello and good morning! I just returned from a drummin' weekend in Maryland, BUMBADA 2009! Bumbada, a Tammi Hessen event has Djembe, Djun, set, conga, dance, voice, shekere classes, great vendors, excellent teachers, time to reconnect with friends, meet new people, good food, at a beautiful camp in the woods. What more can a person ask for? The weather was perfect and the jam sessions sweeeeeet. I played a set for the first time, I may need a set! The energy created in just 2 days is so positive, nurturing, filled with joy and love...I carry it with me...the message I received this weekend was about staying connected and once again about the law of attraction....I just need to be reminded. It's easy to get distracted.

I want to use this space to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Tammi, thank you Ubaka, Jan, Kendal, Mosa, Marcy, Adhi, and all the women at BUMBADA. You all remind me what is truly important, you reinforce and strengthen my will, you spark my creativity and nurture my spirit. I am grateful.

Also thank you Barb and Karen for babysitting the "kids" at The Drumzzone. You're the best!

The Creative Authentic Person..

This past weekend, on the drive to and from Vermont, I contemplated what it means to be a drummer and artist. I found myself studying the shapes, shadows of the mountains, clouds, hawks flying overhead and noticed the beautiful unusual colors all around me. I saw the world outside the car as a painting, sculpture or drawing. I heard rhythms on bumpy roads and as usual, tapped on the steering wheel. The rhythms layered themselves and I invented titles for the compositions in my head.

I think being original, creative, unique, out of the box and a little crazy, is what has brought me such sweet success in business and in my life. It has taken me a long time to become authentic and value all of who I am, even the crazy parts. I use my own voice and talents in all I do..I’m really proud of all I’ve overcome and of every success, I’ve worked hard for it.

I realize that some people truly struggle with being unique...with having a personal style and a voice. They seem unhappy, angry, maybe insecure, jealous, afraid...they are far from peace of mind and spirit. I truly believe that everyone possesses a creative spirit and has the ability to become authentic, it’s just dormant or buried.

I teach a beginner collage class and see people who’ve never picked up a paint brush or drawing pencil create beautiful one-of-a-kind works of art. I give them the tools, teach the skills and encourage. People respond by making a decision to create instead of imitate! I have seen the same in beginner djembe courses. People who’ve never touched an instrument say, I can't do this, I have no rhythm, I can't! After a few weeks of classes they are confident and are jammin' in a drum circle, wow! It’s so rewarding to be a part of the process..

Why this discussion? Two reasons. I am aware and I listen..I hear what people are saying and am aware of what others are doing. I made a conscious decision to focus on MY path, my purpose, my mission, instead of others. I choose not to contribute to negative cycles. The more important second reason I'm talking about this is for my students and anyone out there searching. First thank you all for the compliments. I want to say to you that there is not another person on this planet like you so don’t waste anymore time and energy looking outside yourself for answers to who you are or want to become. LOOK WITHIN, start there! Know that creativity, being genuine and authentic is about confidence, self-esteem, commitment, a willingness to try and not give up or give in. It’s about choice, real WORK! Do the work you need to do on yourself, to become. If you need help with that, take action and go get it! And when you do find your creative spirit, your unique voice, which given time and patience, you will, nurture it so that you can not only speak but sing! Others will hear YOU and see you for the beautiful person you are. Life is too short to not BE you.

These are the first flowers that bring color and life to my garden! WOW! And the honey bees are out today! This raised bed has about 150-200 bulbs. I had a visitor who loves to see what's new in the garden and if she can see the fish in the pond. I'll share more pics with you soon. Namaste' and get outside and enjoy the SUN!!

Social Work Conference March 2009

Kam and I were honored to be a part of the 2009 Social Work Conference where we saw familiar faces and met new people including a group of really fun UHS social workers. After attending the morning drum workshop, the UHS women returned with the rest of their colleagues for the afternoon session. They came in a bit early to warm up and had a great jam session before the workshop. Most were first time drummers! YEA! I think this is just the beginning for this group!! Check out those nice therapist nails, they told me they were "wild ones" and I believe them! Thank you all for your energy and thanks Renee for including African Drumming in this years conference. Therapists give so much of themselves and their time to helping others heal and do their best to make the world a better place. It was nice to introduce drumming to such kind, caring, compassionate people. I'm grateful for the experience of drumming with all of you today and hope to be working with you again!

Kam Kayaking?

So, this photo is from the Fall, the last Kayak trip we took. I don't have many pics of myself in the boat but have many of other people. Kam is quite adventurous and thought it would be "fun" to paddle through the cattails...I obviously wasn't feelin' the adventure thing and watched her try to get out! It was pretty funny. I can not wait to get out on the water again, it's been a looong winter! I think I'll stay out of the shallow plant areas....lesson learned without the experience.

Kam and I just returned from a trip to Albany for another corporate drumming workshop. We had a fantastic time at a beautiful, amazing resort, hotel! We want to thank everyone who participated in the workshop and those behind the scenes as well. We hope to work with you all again soon! It was nice to see familiar faces and meet new and interesting people too. What a wonderful weekend. On the road I saw so many red-tail hawks and ROBINS!! Today at The Drumzzone, a gentleman came in to tell me HIS story, and to thank me. I was so moved...it's a reminder of how powerful positive energy is and that you have no idea who you will touch by what you say, what you do, and who you are. Months ago while serving in Iraq, he received one of my 3 fold African Drum brochures in the mail. He was having a hard time, struggling mentally, emotionally and read my para. about the benefits of drumming. My words on that piece of paper gave him hope. It had such an effect on him that he began to search for a Djembe in Iraq! He was transferred to Israel where he purchased a djembe and started playing. It changed and maybe saved his life..gave him something to help him cope. He told me he carried me with him and wanted to meet me in person to thank ME for, for making a difference in his life. I didn't know what to say....how could I ever imagine that my message, mission to share the drum, give people a tool to improve the quality of their lives could reach someone so far away. He's been home a very short time and made a point to visit ME. wow. He's going to use his drum to help other men, other vets cope. The drum has not only become a tool for health, a way to help others, but a spiritual path as well. All of this because of something I said on a piece of paper. I can't wrap my mind around meeting this man today..such a gentle, kind person. I feel humbled...I wanted to share the story with you in hopes you will begin to think about all the people you come in contact with and how important your words and actions are. There is no way to know how many people you will touch, it's like ripples in water. I believe that negative energy can be just as powerful, with a very different result! Something to think about...

Today was so much fun, and to see you all playing the Djuns was awesome! Talk about energy! YEA! GREAT class! Congrats to those who found your drums at The Zone. DrumZZone Drummer - Nick

Nick lives looks forward to a visit from "the drum girls". He's 100 years young and his mind is soooo sharp! I think he has a better memory than I do! He's one of the first in the room and has a great sense of rhythm. He likes the deeper sounding drums and just tried the djuns for the first time, LOVED them and said, "Now THESE are the drums for ME!" He likes to know how the drums are made and inspects the work. He was a wood carver and appreciates the work of African carvers. Nick says, "drumming makes me feel alive, makes me want to dance!" I know he is, inside. He doesn't like "sittin' around doing nothin'" and keeps himself busy. He tells stories about his encounters with Frank Sinatra in NYC...he talks to us as we load every drum on our cart. I'm pretty tall and when we're done the drums are stacked as high and sometimes even higher than me. This amazes Nick that we carry all those drums around. He always asks when I'll return and hugs me before I go. It feels good to know I make a difference to people like Nick...

DrumZZone Drummer - Tanya & "Funky Drum"

Many things make The DrumZZone unique, special. People who come to my classes, workshops and circles are positive and supportive. Without them I can't do what I do everyday. Many of them are like family.

Meet Tanya. She's hilarious, full of light, a SUNY grad, newlywed and has been taking lessons off and on. She drums to relieve stress and take care of herself. She was so interested in health benefits of playing African drums, she wrote her thesis on it.

She had a large djembe, came in to volunteer, apparently she likes to count and help with inventory (yuck), and fell in love with a drum Kam and I put together. After a few days of obsession, she sold her drum and purchased Funky Drum. This drum is hot, looks cool, and I wondered why it was hanging around. Sometimes it takes time for a drum to find its owner or a person to find their drum. Her joy when playing is infectious. Once she starts she says it's hard to stop! The pic was taken the day she came to pick up the drum! Happy? Uh, yea.

Rashi in "the tower of power"

As you are beginning to understand, Rash is a busy boy. On my door hangs this cool fabric, tent maze for cats! They can crawl inside up levels or climb up on the outside to enter various holes in the front or on the sides. We call this thing "the tower of power" because Ra learned that if he hangs out the hole at the top he is a bit above eye level to a person and can touch your face or hair as you walk by. He moves fast and if you forget he's in there it's a surprise. Most of the time he touches the back of your head. No, he does not use claws, he is gentle and just wants attention, it's a game....Abyssinians like to be in the highest locations in the house, they just do.

Alode' opening for Ubaka Hill - Kakilambe

Hiking- A story of strength.

So, Kam and I were hiking (Fall 08) and we came upon a huge pile of boulders that were too high to climb over, so I decided to split them and push them aside. We thought we should take a few photos as proof of my strength...a good idea I know. When I looked at the pics, wow, not only amazed at the size of the rocks and yes I am very strong but check out all the faces in the boulders!! Reminds me of one of my favorite artists, Bev Doolittle. Good story, hey?

Sharp-shinned Hawk encounter at The DrumZZone.

So, I was getting in the truck to pick up take out and this hawk was sitting about 5 ft away from me with a meal of its own! I didn't see it at first, actually walked right in front and got in the truck. I figured it would take off when I started the engine, but it didn't, and in fact was still there when I returned. I thought, okay, I have to get out, carry my stuff, for sure it will fly....the hawk wasn't startled, looked right at me. I could see every feather, bright yellow eyes, amazing. I've had close hawk encounters before and each time is a surprise and a gift. It wasn't till I got my camera that it flew. Did NOT like the looks of the camera! Only took 2 pics...no I didn't get an in flight pic, I kinda froze....beautiful.

My Rashi

So, this is Rashi (Ra), my Abyssinian, cute, funny, incredibly smart! He's more like a dog than cat. More specific? Border Collie cat. He needs a job or he'll get bored and that's not a good thing. I've never owned a pure bred before or even paid for a pet, but Ra is really special and makes me laugh a lot! I do have another cat, Saburi (Sabu), who was a rescue and the 2 are best friends. My thoughts on cats: 2 is way better than one, 3 is good, 4 tooo many! People have way too many negative misconceptions about cats...I'll talk about that another time. You'll be seeing more about my boys for sure.

I'm very excited to welcome you to "Elizabeth World".....

Many of you know me as a Djembe instructor, performer, and know about me through DrumZZone.com or met me at a drum workshop or circle, and that's it. This is a wonderful opportunity to share other parts of my world with you, my thoughts and feelings, my talents, hobbies and who I am beyond the drummer.

I'm told I'm quite the storyteller and that I always have something to say, about...well everything! I guess that's true and even more so, as many of you have experienced first hand, when I have caffeine in my system. I will try NOT to have coffee or coke or any other caffeinated beverage before sitting to write but can't promise!

I think this will be a really fun journey. Keep checking in!
